Hand Surgery Fellowship

Program Description

The Hand Surgery Fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is an ACGME accredited program and accepts two fellows per academic year: August 1^st – July 31^st. The fellowship has significant clinical responsibilities. Each fellow rotates with surgeons on the Hand Surgery Service, with an opportunity to work with attendings in the shoulder and elbow service if desired. Penn Orthopaedics' current surgical volume is approximately 1,400 cases per year and approximately 15,000 outpatient visits per year. A didactic lecture and case conference schedule is incorporated into the residency program. The fellows participate in these teaching conferences.

Research opportunities include participation in several ongoing clinical research projects as well as basic science research. Active basic science research includes the study of:

• Tendon healing
• The biomechanics of implants used in hand surgery
• Tissue engineering

The basic science research projects are conducted in close collaboration among the clinicians in the McKay Orthopaedic Research Laboratory under the direction of Louis Soslowsky, PhD. Clinical research projects include:

• Management and outcome of fractures of the distal radius
• Uses of arthroscopy in the treatment of upper extremity disorders
• Use of computer technology and the Internet in the care of patients with upper extremity disorders

Requirements

Applicants must have completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery or General Surgery accredited by the ACGME or RCPSC or CFPC-accredited residency program in Canada to be considered. Qualification is also dependent upon successful completion of USMLE Steps 1, 2 and 3 as well as the ability to obtain licensure in the state of Pennsylvania and employment in the United States. For IMGs considering our program, you must be ECFMG certified and have taken USMLE Step 3 for your application to be considered complete for review. 

How to Apply 

Applicants must apply through the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) Portal. Applications are due November 15^th. The hand fellowship match is managed by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). This application platform is not connected in any way with the NRMP. Candidates need to separately register for the match and create a match list with the NRMP.
